Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Here is another interesting article on the statistics of online dating.
As you know, online dating is booming judging by the recent takeover of OkCupid by Match.com and the boost in Match.com earnings from subscribers. In short, we are nowhere near saturation point and more people are looking online to find their partner.
The age group that go to these sites typically range from 18 all the way to 55+ with the biggest proportion in the 18-34 age bracket (almost 50%).
Although looks can play a big part in finding your partner, the article says that 86% women and 67% men prefer personality over looks which puts men in very much favor of finding their partner.
The three biggest fibs that are repeated in peoples online profiles are age, weight and income, which comes as no surprise.

there is more to the person than just looks

Here is another good post on a happy success story where a couple met through an online dating site and some helpful tips for the user.
The couple like so many of us were skeptics and didn’t believe in soul mates or love at first site until they met each other.
One simple trend that I see every time I read about success stories is that both couple went slowly into the relationship. There have been cases where couples clicked right away and were immediately swept away and those cases tend to be rare and normally end up in a broken relationship.
Their tips to successful online dating includes the following;
- Remain anonymous until you feel comfortable
- Get to know each other as much as possible before a meeting
- Never share your financial information
- Meet in a public place

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
The is a press release of a new dating site which has been around seven months called MyLiveDate.com. Although, I do not do many reports on press releases but if something is useful to the reader, I will let them know.
The concept of the MyLiveDate site is nothing new which is to get members having a face to face communication through their online web cams. The technology has been around for a while and some dating companies have tried to make use of it but the sad truth of it is that it just didn’t catch on as most dating companies found out and we are talking about 5-10 years ago.
However, now that every laptop, smartphone etc do come with their built in camera this scenario may change. There is no convincing required on anyones part to appreciate the value of a face to face chat as compared to an impersonal email or IM chat. Lets see how many online dating companies start taking an interest.

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
This is a detailed post and highlights some of the important trends in the online dating industry. It’s probably the reason why huffingtonpost.com caught the eyes of AOL who eventually purchased them.
Several points have been made, but since I keep my post short and concise, I will only list a few of the very relevant points.
The worldwide dating industry is estimated to be worth $4 billion a year with a handful of the top sites occupying a bulk of the space ie. match.com and eharmony which pulls in hundreds of millions of dollars each year. The writer has pointed out that there hasn’t been any significant changes in these sites in the last four years to keep abreast of the ever changing pace of technology and users needs. It’s possible that the same business model has been working well for these sites.
However, there have been new players on the market who have utilized facebook very well like zoosk to become a strong player in the market. The thinking is that as more people become more accustomed to the foray of new technology such as the smartphones, ipad there needs to be a new mindset with regards to ‘dating’. The old ways of dating may change completely.
A relevant point mentioned for newcomers to the online dating industry is the cost of starting a website and getting the acquired member base on the site. This could potentially rule out many of the new-comers and only allow a handful of dating sites to succeed.
