Evidence to support online dating activity to increase after an earthquake? - Dr Dato’s Brief

I read with much enthusiasm about an article that I found where in Christchurch, New Zealand a recent earthquake motivated many singles to become more active in the online dating activity scene.
I read through the article and unfortunately, there were no explanations offered by the writer as to why this increase in activity may have resulted except the observations of increased online activity.
I will try to offer my explanations on this topic.
Often in online dating sites, there is a flurry of activity around seasonal times such as Christmas, Valentines Day and other national holidays. This can be attributed to the extra time that people have in their hands during those holidays as well as, in my opinion, a sense of reflection and no doubt a sense of loneliness if you are single.
It is during those holiday periods that we come to reflect on all things that we have some priorities that we have pushed out in time as we are too busy with our daily lives. For families, it’s about spending more time with their children, for youngsters to go and do the exciting things like travel or extreme sports etc.
During an earthquake, the effect of ‘doing the stuff that have been postponed’ becomes greater due to the added perception that there is little time left in this world and we may have limited time. This could be the prime reason for single folks to rush to the internet to find their match before the time runs out. It shows the vulnerability of all human beings and the ‘fear’ that is instilled when a major event happens in our lives. Realistically, we all know that anything can happen any time and an earthquake should not be the reason to get us moving again.

You may have come across the term ‘white label dating’ and never really understood it’s meaning or significance. When you visit many of the online dating sites around today, you may be using one of these ‘white label dating’ sites without knowing.
The concept originally came to fruition about 6 years ago when a humble company in UK found a niche in all the dating sites that were currently out there. I recently came across an interesting article by a woman who provides some insightful information with regarding to asking the right questions when it comes to men. You can find this article here.
To me, the set of questions almost came across a bit like interviewing techniques when you are standing in front of an interviewer answering some deep questions related to the job. It struck me, why can’t people be as cold and brash when selecting partners, after all, the interview process for a job can be quite stringent and has proved well with companies otherwise they would hire on the spot.
What can we learn from this..
Basically the key according to the writer Julie Knight is asking the right set of questions. By analyzing their responses she decides whether to remove the profile and continue moving on. Some of these questions are as follows;
- How long ago did you end your last relationship?
- What did you like about my profile?
- What do you see yourself doing in five years?
- Tell me a story that shows me what kind of parent you are
I think one has to be careful when analyzing the questions, do not just base your decision on just the outcome of one question, look at the whole profile, because people are humans and they have flaws and in a long-term relationship one has to work hard to work and adapt not only to one’s strengths but their weaknesses too.

More and more people are using the online dating sites as a way to meet other people. Although the statistics look very rosy for dating site owners, there are many users who simply do not utilize the full potential of the dating sites and are missing opportunities.
One of the the most prevalent issue is that some users once they have signed up to the dating sites will stop coming back and will have wasted all that time signing up and putting up information on their profile.
I have a theory about this and this is based on many individuals who feel that ’someone’ will come in their way either through online dating, at work or any other chance meeting or event.
