I read with much enthusiasm about an article that I found where in Christchurch, New Zealand a recent earthquake motivated many singles to become more active in the online dating activity scene.

I read through the article and unfortunately, there were no explanations offered by the writer as to why this increase in activity may have resulted except the observations of increased online activity.

I will try to offer my explanations on this topic.

Often in online dating sites, there is a flurry of activity around seasonal times such as Christmas, Valentines Day and other national holidays. This can be attributed to the extra time that people have in their hands during those holidays as well as, in my opinion, a sense of reflection and no doubt a sense of loneliness if you are single.

It is during those holiday periods that we come to reflect on all things that we have some priorities that we have pushed out in time as we are too busy with our daily lives. For families, it’s about spending more time with their children, for youngsters to go and do the exciting things like travel or extreme sports etc.

During an earthquake, the effect of ‘doing the stuff that have been postponed’ becomes greater due to the added perception that there is little time left in this world and we may have limited time. This could be the prime reason for single folks to rush to the internet to find their match before the time runs out. It shows the vulnerability of all human beings and the ‘fear’ that is instilled when a major event happens in our lives. Realistically, we all know that anything can happen any time and an earthquake should not be the reason to get us moving again.
