Once you have planned your trip and eagerly looking forward to the new adventure, the next set of tasks involve what you will need and the essential items you will take with you.

My best advice is to travel as light as possible, do not cram your baggage with items that you feel that you may or may not use.

To get a better idea of how to pack your bags, ask yourself what are the absolute necessities of this travel and these will likely include, your toothbrush/toothpaste, underwear with plenty to spare, sleep wear and maybe an indoor walking sandal.

When taking your toothbrush, if it’s electric, make sure that the place of destination will have the correct voltage or socket for operating your toothbrush.

Some tooth brushes have enough juice in them to last many days, check that this is the case before you leave.

Take a normal toothbrush with you just in case.

Make sure to take lots of underwear because you may not have easy access to a laundry and in any case if you are going away only for a few days or so, you can take a sufficient number without having to worry about washing them.

You always have the option to wash your clothes in any bathroom sink, so as a precaution take a bar of soap with you.

Some of the destination places will provide all the bathroom sundries such as soap, shampoo and towels but do know beforehand so you know what to take with you.

Sleep wear is a personal taste for most people and some people just prefer to sleep in a t-shirt and their boxers or even their underwear.

The next important checklist is to decide what kind of outer wear clothes you will be wearing and this will depend on the weather and any activities that you will be doing whilst there.

This can consist of the bulk of your clothing and it is better to take the least that you can get away with.

Remember also to take some more casual and smart clothes for evening attire as you are both likely to go on evening walks, dinners and shows maybe.

For shoes, I would take only the required number depending on activities.

For general day-to-day activities a good pair of sneakers will be great and they will be particularly beneficial for extraneous activities such as running and regular day to day walking.

Have a pair of evening shoes that match the evening attire.

Don’t forget overcoats and warm clothing if the weather is expected to be cold.

Make sure to check and find out if the temperature varies considerably during the day so you may need to take a combination of lighter and warmer clothes.

If it rains, you will also need to take a small umbrella and a weather proof jacket with you.

If you know you are going for a specific activity such as skiing or snow-boarding, there are many websites and shops that will point you in the right direction.

By planning ahead like this, you will also get an idea of any baggage that you may have in your possession and whether to buy additional bags.

I have seen last minute attempts by many people in rushing to shops for bags when their flight is only a few hours away.

Your next check list will contain essentials such as your personal electronics.

If you are taking your cellphone, make sure to take your charger and if possible take an extra charger with you.

Your digital camera should come with a charger and if it uses AA or AAA batteries, take these and some extra with you.

Depending on how much pictures and videos you are likely to shoot, take additional flash card that the camera uses.

They are very cheap and you should always carry a spare with you all the time.

Keep all your camera gear in a case that accommodates all these items and put a duster or a lens cleaning cloth as part of the accessories.

You may also have a laptop to take with you and I would encourage that you to take a laptop that is portable and easy to carry around with you.
