Shyness can get in the way of dating – Part 8
<<< Shyness can get in the way of dating – Part 7
In order to break into the ‘barrier’ of the group, the shy person must fully understand that the distorted viewpoint they have created earlier has no bearing within the group.
It should be dismissed as nothing but pure fantasy and everyone’s input in the conversation is permitted no matter how bad or good.

fantasy is an illusion just like shyness
This leads me to the other qualm that shy people often face which is saying something of importance to the group or not saying anything at all.
The fact that they are waiting to say something which will be meaningful and purposeful to the group means they will miss the opportunity many a times and as a result their anxiety levels increase.

Most of us have seen some people in a conversation that are completely natural and we come to admire their effortless articulation and poise during the conversation.

confident individual
However, in truth they may be talking with much poise and confidence but their subject matter and knowledge may be lacking. Shy people because of their inward nature of the world can often miss these points and they are not able to bring anything valuable to the discussion.
Their personality can appear completely opposite to the way they are expected to behave in a group. One can understand and learn from this and find out why that is the case and take some actions.
In the same way that individuals feel comfortable with some persons but not all persons, the same rule can apply to that of groups.

You should also recognize that groups have their own distinct dynamics depending on the individuals in the group, the subject matter etc. and some groups are easy to entertain while others are not.

not all groups are equal
Do not feel that if you are not comfortable in one group, it is because of you and your shyness.
If you are paying attention to the group and the subject, you may find that it is not of interest to you.
In some groups there maybe people who are well known to each other and their topic of discussion maybe one they revisited before thus allowing them to talk freely and openly without involving new members of the group.

You should project yourself outside of your own self and observe everything around you.
Look at all the people in the group and find out what they are saying and try to understand how they are contributing to the group.

pay real attention
Ask yourself whether only a handful of people are trying to control the conversation or if there is a leader in the pack. It is your prerogative to decide if you want to listen to the subject matter they are discussing about or just leave.
If you find yourself leaving the conversation or switching off most of the time, you may not be giving yourself the opportunity to be part of the group.

Try to reenergize yourself with interesting topics and subjects that you are passionate about and seek out groups or people that have similar interests.
You may also consider bringing about a new topic of discussion for a group conversation.

think outside of yourself
Thinking like this outside of the box will definitely help you overcome your shyness.
Look at the bigger picture and try to observe the group, the topic of discussion, the people, their mannerism and this will take your mind of you and help you see a bigger picture.
A shy person can give awkward signals without he/she not knowing about it and send the wrong message to a potential dating partner.
They may appear cold and unapproachable to other people. Do not expect that a simple smile will allow you to fit in, people can sense other intangible energies too such as mood and energy from the person.
