Secondly, you will need to be astute in basic html, programming, internet terminologies and other familiar tools of the internet.

If you are a complete novice in html, be prepared to spend some money by outsourcing the work to freelancers you can find in elance.com or guru.com.

You may need to hire a technology expert to help you with some of the key decisions about the site.

It really does help to understand something of the technology and at the bare minimum you should be able to ftp to your site and tweak html page changes on the fly.

In my first webmaster role, I was stationed in New York where I was placed in charge in developing a brand new online booking system for the company.

There was one gentlemen of the ‘old school’ kind who had some knowledge of the internet but was unable to do anything useful with it.

It took me 15 minutes to show him the ftp tool and how to access the page and pull it into an editor and make updates to the web page.

All his misconceptions of this technology disappeared and in a very short period of time he was designing web pages, something that he had never done before.

I saw the same rate of progress with other individuals that I have shown and again their progress were very rapid. It was as though an entire window had opened up for them.

The reason, I want to elaborate on this point is because many people have an abject fear or ignorance of this technology and hinders their progress to do anything useful.

It is something that is easily overcome.
