A Chinese Astrology Primer by Yvonne Yang (Your in house astrology expert!)

Oh my! So many questions from you, the readers!
Good to know you are so taken with this subject, so lets get down to the basics…

Astrology, in general, does not predict your future in tablets of stone. It does not tell you what your fate is. What it does is describe the potential, your potential, your talents, your awareness of others and of yourself, and that knowledge empowers you to make choices to shape your own destiny.

Western astrology is based on 12 constellations of stars which roughly follows the 12 months of the year. So Capricorn we normally associate with December-January, Aquarius for the next month, Pisces, the next and so on.

The Chinese Zodiac is based on a set of animals, with each animal designated to a particular year. This year is the year of the Rabbit, the next year will be the Dragon, then Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, then Rabbit again. So by calculating backwards, you can find out which animal was your year.

Unfortunately, it gets a little complicated because the beginning of the Chinese astrological year is based on the “Beginning of Spring” which is usually taken as the 4th February. So if you are born before 4th Feb. in the Year of the Rabbit, (this year) then you are a Tiger and not a Rabbit. If you were born after 4th Feb 2011, then you are a true Rabbit. So if you were born before 4th Feb 2012, you are still a Rabbit, but if after 4th Feb. 2012, then you are a Dragon!!

So now you know the sequence of the animals, have fun and calculate backward to find out what animal sign you are!

Each animal is endowed with certain characteristics. It would take too long to go into all the details of the 12 animals. However, as you are in the year of the Rabbit, we’ll start with him first. The Rabbit is a gentle, peaceful and compassionate person. He or she could be artistic and will definitely go all out for the children. They are industrious at work and are normally the ‘early bird’ type rather than the ‘work late’ type.

Match-making/Dating/Friendship tips:
A Rabbit will get on well with another Rabbit, also with the Ox, Sheep, Snake and Pig. They will not get on with the Rat, Rooster or Monkey. They may get on with the Tiger (who could be the dominant one in the relationship), Dog (the Dog will benefit more from the duo) and the Dragon who could be the one to look after the Rabbit, rather than the other way round. On account of his compassionate nature, it is usually the Rabbit who tends to others.

So now you know what to do, try it out on your mates, gals and guys at work and see whether it rings true for you!

Online Dating Briefs by Dr. Dato - Online dating ‘could become the norm’

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

This is general use with the post reiterating what people seem to know and appreciate already today….
‘Online dating medium could be the most common way that single people will likely to meet in the future’

The noted that professor of psychology Roger Brooked had observed that the creation of online communities have helped facilitate the creation of communities where people can communicate across globe aka Facebook as an example.

I would go as far and say that the recent resurgence in interest in online dating has been driven primarily by the demand in social dating sites such as Facebook. More people are becoming familiar with the online tools and now seeing the benefit of communicating with other singles through this online medium. This has probably spurred the growth of a few names that we may have already heard such as zoosk, bandoo just to name a few.

Online Dating Briefs by Dr. Dato - Online Dating: The good, the bad and the ugly

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

This article talks about the merits of online dating and is followed by several people contributing to their online dating experiences.

I would agree with some of the posts that says that you cannot put down online dating because of the types of people that you meet on the sites. Like anything you need to wade through all the ‘undesirables’ to find your ideal match. Several commentators have found success with online dating whereas others have given up trying.

The bottom line is that online dating can work but you need to be alert to the fact that the medium of online dating allows potentially anyone socially inept, rich, poor, sociopaths, young, old etc. to register to the sites. Therefore, you are likely to find an entire community of people on the sites and you simply need to filter through them patiently to find the right person.

I think some people are possibly too quick to judge and give up easily. We tend to live in a world where instant gratification seems to be the norm.

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

This is a very useful documentation which talks about the pitfalls of paid dating sites and the increase in complaints received by users regarding many of the issues related to such sites. Some of them being the following;

- dissatisfaction with the quantity of date matches, incompatibility with resulting matches
- high pressure sales tactics used by sales representatives
- complaints alleging automatic renewal of dating service contracts and the inability to cancel

The post also recommends to look up the dating service provider through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and check company’s information. I did a search for eharmony and match and there were some interesting statistics on the ongoing complaints received by users.

BBB is a very useful resource to find out about a company regarding user complaints
