This is a good post on potential online dating financial scams that are still in play today. Although, most of us are aware of the many scams still at work today, we have become accustomed to some of them including the Nigerian scam where an email is sent to individuals making an appeal of clemency on behalf of a distressed widow of an army officer with millions of dollars stashed away in a foreign bank.
We have to continue to be alert to some of the creative ways that scammers are coming up with to swindle people out of money and it is no different to the online dating world where scammers prey on some of those people and prey on their vulnerabilities. The post gives good tips on how to be more alert to these type of scams and make you more savvy in detecting others.
Don’t rely on a photo
Photos are the easiest way to convince and attract the opposite sex. Pictures of women dressed too provocatively can be tell tale signs of scammers, if you are not sure, read carefully the communication that ensues.
Don’t give or accept money
These are the surest signs of scam, whenever a user asks for money or tries to give you money. Couple this with the photo and messages sent and you can probably string them together to discover their act.
Some dating sites such as Jumpdates.com has an excellent scam screening process and the site makes it very easy for users to report a scammer and warning other members on the site.

Some good advice in this post from David Wygant an expert on The Naked Truth Behind Dating, Sex and Relationships.
He talks about how to connect with women at an emotional level through the online profile and is targeted towards men in particular.
I too have found that online profiles are generally very static and lacking in substance especially the ones by men. They don’t generally move you in any way.
His argument is that women need some emotional connection with somethings and he gives some good examples. For example if you visited Italy and you said something like “I love Italy”, this naturally sounds boring compared to say “On my trip to Italy, I cruised down the Positano Coast and saw the most amazing sunset you can ever believe”. This stirs up an emotional feeling in people.
He concludes that online dating is more about a conversation than just stating facts and is no different to flirting in a bar, at a supermarket or anywhere else.

This post talks about the dos and dont’s of finding a date online by Joy Browne who is author of Dating For Dummies (3rd Edition). Although, I am fairly certain that the book will go into much more detail than the information on this post, nevertheless, there is good advise here and I would recommend further reading.
Some of the important points about posting a profile and dating online that is mentioned in the post include the following;
- Be precise when writing your profile
- Think about what makes you unusual and focus on those points to make yourself stand out
- Make your English teacher proud (I mentioned this point previously in my Dr Dato posts)
- Be honest with yourself, I particularly like her remark about shaving a year or two is ok with age, but decades are questionable 
- Practice safety and date within 25 mile radius

Here is another press release on another new site that claims to solve singles unhappiness ‘through the maze of useless hype which fills the internet dating scene in 2011′, in their words.
Of course, I visited the site and it looks very similar to an infomercial that we have seen time and time again of people who claims to hold the secret knowledge to ‘great wealth’. It reads exactly like that, were you read each line - makes great sense - read the next line - makes even greater sense - then continue to read all the way to bottom and naturally you have the option to purchase something.
The thinking behind these websites are a way to motivate users to feel that there is something ‘great’ behind all of this and you take the plunge and find that there is really nothing there.
I am not a great fan of these types of sites but people do fall for them, eg. the person who says you can make money instantly through their marketing tool or someone who claims to make you instant money through their internet programs.
These websites simply pray on the mind of the ‘negativity’ of the individual and usually last for a very short period of time, creating hype as they exploit those individuals, make money and close business.
You may ask, how can I be so sure?
It’s pretty simple really, because if you read the press release the very thing that they are trying to cultivate and push propaganda against, are exactly the same thing that they are doing. For example, “It is so disheartening to see so many singles being taking advantage of by slick promotions…”
A genuine offer of a product, would be transparent and to the point and not laced with negativity and having the holy grail to the ‘pocket of information’ that will solve all our problems and woes.

In UK alone, one in six people now meet through an online dating site whereas in USA this figure is about one in five. Some tips from leading dating companies suggest that creating a catchy headline for your profile is important but make it unique and not the same way ie. “Bubbly personality”.
A Bath University lecturer said that your email address, spelling, speed of replying all adds to how they measure you from the other side. Doing a spell check is vital for some readers.
Some readers who have written in to say that the online profile cannot say much until you have seen him/her in person, “I have have been excited through texting and emails but when we met there were no sparks”
One single mum says she would tick all the boxes in her profile just to increase her chances. “An initial phone chat allows you to find out much about the person and if they are willing to introduce you to friends and families, its the best way to see what his world looks like and how you would fit in”.
