Dating in India - A current perspective

Dating means something different in every culture and varies from country to country. The social dating scene in each culture is dependant on social values, tolerance, etiquette, expectations, and motivations by people of that culture.

India’s rich heritage and history dates back to over 5000 years, and has been a hub for one of the greatest cultures and traditions in existance today.

One of the strongest traditions relates to marriage and how couples are brought together in pursuit of a family life as it pertains to the culture and beliefs.

Though some matches are made based on mutual attraction, far more couples are the product of arranged marriages, and casual dating without the firm goal of marriage in mind is not very common and is often frowned upon.

Not all couples have the opportunity to meet before their wedding day, trusting in their parents’ ability to make the best choice for them.

But nowadays, many young people are actively involved in their choices along with their parents; finding a spouse has become a family project.

Marriage is held with high ideals and values and as such divorce is highly frowned upon in the Indian culture.

This makes choosing the right partner can be a harrowing process since many people witin the family can get involved in the process.

To understand dating in the Indian scene one needs to understand how the idea of bringing couples together has evolved through the times.

The idea of letting parents choose a husband or wife for the person can appear somewhat unusual to most Westerners.

However, this is not the case when viewed from the eye of an Indian person.

Here, it is considered the parents’ duty to help their offspring make the wisest choices possible in regard to their lifetime partners, and this duty is carried out with great love and care for their sons and daughters.

Parents believe the decision is too big for their children to make alone, with their limited life experiences, and so they draw on their own considerable life experience and wisdom to help ensure their children are suitably matched for the greatest chance of marital success.

Partners are chosen in keeping within some commonalities of background such as religion, similar levels of education, matching caste or cultures etc.
