Previously we discussed how search engines have become a common part of our daily lives and for many people it has changed the way we we work. For example, when doing research or troubleshooting we turn to the search engine to locate not only the correct website but the actual page that contains what we are seeking.

Such granularity is what made search engines so useful and powerful and to understand some of it’s inner workings help us to be more efficient and productive with the application. In essence there is a lot going on under the ‘hood’ of the search engine and what it presents to the user is deceptively simple.

If you look at Fig. 1, you will see the structure of the Google search results page and what is represented in the various sections of the page. Essentially there are three core sections and they are very clearly defined as ’sponsored listings’, ‘organic search results’ and ‘adwords paid listings’.

The sponsored listing is where you will only see at the most three adverts above the organic results section and this is because Google is true to it’s original motto of providing an unbiased result sets based on it’s unique search algorithms. This is the reason why Google still retains the top position in search engines because it caters to the end user and if it ended up serving the interests of the advertisers it will lose the world wide audience.

The organic listings is the area that you will be most likely be interested in because this is the section where the ‘best’ matches are found based on the keywords that you typed in. These are the results coming directly from the heart of the Googles engine and is based on it’s unique search engine to give you the ‘end user’ with the most relevant and useful matches possible.

To the right is the Adwords listing that is available to anyone wishing to advertise on this space and compete for keywords bids through the Paid Per Click advertising (PPC). However the organic listing is the most important section where you will be conducting your searches to find the best free dating sites.

We discussed using a good computer and a browser for the task at hand and they will be your gateway to connect to the internet (the window of the world). I should really define search engines as the window to the world.

The power of the search engines come from having visited every corner of the globe (internet) crawling for information on websites, blogs, news archives to get every snippet of information that maybe useful to their end user. We have all become so accustomed to the search engines today that we take it for granted and it is the most powerful ‘encyclopedia’ to all things useful and valuable to us.

Remember search engines are still fallible, just like when you read about the ‘content farms’ that are usurping much traffic by tricking search engines into having ‘real’ content lifted from other websites. Google’s search engines like other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo are continuously evolving to stay not only competitive in this market but also positioning themselves as indispensable to many of their users. It is no wonder that Google is the number one most recognized brand in other countries such as England and a few other nations.

Like anything else, for example, learning to dance, some of the fundamentals of the dancing are taught first like breaking down the steps. The same applies to using search engines and to maximize your effort in using these tools, you can rely on your intuition but it is so much better if you were armed with a handful of tips and shortcuts which over time will save you lots of time.

If you haven’t done so already, you will need to use some of the latest browsers for conducting your search. I know what you are saying, have been so comfortable using this ancient browser for so many years and you are comfortable with the buttons and where everything is positioned, why bother changing it. Again, this comes down to keeping up with the times, you will not only miss the new features that are available on the web but in fact your efficiency will be reduced.

Noticed, I said ‘efficiency’ and what this means is that you are actually less productive than you could be, if you spent a few hours trying to adapt to the new browser. One example of this would be the ‘tab’ feature which is extremely helpful to have as it opens a few windows within the same browser instead of multiple windows. Other examples include remembering your password etc. It will be time well spent, trust me. The folks at Microsoft, Apple and Google are burning the midnight oil trying to come up with usable products for you and not for them, because that is what keeps them in business.

Article Subject: 4. Use good computers to make your life easier

Now that you have prepared yourself psychology for this venture ahead, bear in mind that there will be challenges on the way and your resilience to this will be a test of your character.

You will need a reasonably good computer and not the ancient ten year old ones with Windows 98, there is nothing worse than having bad tools for the job. You don’t see plumbers, electricians or even medical people holding onto ancient artifacts unless of course it’s really good and does the job.

I am sad to say that in the age of technology, the advances in this field is so rapid that your electronic devices become obsolete in a matter of a few years if not months. Look at the rapidly changing environment of the hand-held such as the smart phones, ipad and more, there never seems to the same model for more than a few months.

I am not implying that you need to stay abreast of all the latest gizmos and get every device you can get your hand on, but you will need to work with something reasonably modern and that is still in use today. For a PC, a Windows XP still does the job and some of the iMac going back several years are also good. Make sure that your PC or iMac are up to date with the latest updates and you have the most recent browser installed on your machines.
