Relax and Enjoy the Fast and Thrilling Experiance: Drive

Movie: Drive
Year: 2011
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Stars: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston

Snapshot of Story:
The story is about a lone man who works as a car mechanic during the day and also is a driver for some heists during the evening.

Kickstart to Story:
Ryan Gosling plays the driver who’s character is developed throughout the story. Although a loner by choice he has a few friends and befriends his next door neighbor Irene played by Carey Mulligan. There are no pretenses to their mutual attraction for each other and Irene’s loyalty to her husband and child was subtle but well executed. On the other hand, the ‘driver’ is very stand offish and restrains himself from committing more than friendship into their relationship.

When Irene’s husband returns from prison, the driver immediately encompasses the husband into his friendship but his primary reason is that he sincerely cared for the well-being of both Irene and the son. The husband quickly finds himself in trouble and the driver steps in to help but becomes entangled in a heist that goes wrong and also the beginning of the nail-biting action that ensues.

Memorable moments in the movie:
The beginning of the movie was very well crafted where there are no dialogue but action of a heist that takes place with the driver and two other people. The driver leaves a police radio switched on so he can follow the conversation going on between the police cars and the station. Thus we follow the action through the eyes of the police chase to apprehend the driver, very well done.

In another scene, to avoid detection the driver pulls Irene towards him in the lift and kisses her on the mouth. We are left wandering what was going through Irene’s head after the kiss.

Final Notes:
The movie is extremely well made with the director creating the mood and pace of the movie with much precision that amplifies the drivers personality and the sinister minds of the criminal underground. Parts of the movie are exceptionally violent and portrays the cold and brutal nature of the driver but yet reveals the sensitive side to him when it came to Irene and her son.

The Hilarious Comedy by Kristen Wiig: Bridesmaid

Movie: Bridesmaids
Year: 2011
Director: Paul Feig
Stars: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph

Snapshot of Story:
The story is about a frustrated woman Annie played by Kristen Wiig who has been unlucky in love and find that her best friend is about to get married. She becomes determined to be the perfect maid of honor but the path to this becomes difficult as she faces competition from another woman who is also chosen to help in the wedding plan.

Kickstart to Storyline:
Kristen (Annie) gives a very convincing performance as the woman with no luck in her relationships and a mother she is not able to stand. Although the story is not about the actual relationships of man and woman but more of a perspective of woman’s behavior with each other and occasionally the men in their lives. All the women are deliberately portrayed with unique and distinct personalities which brings about the whole turns and twists in the movies with much comedy action.

Annie is determined to make a mark for herself as maid of honor, in a way to overcome the deficiencies in her present life. As a result she almost misses out on the strange fascination and attraction she has with a police officer. The police officer who goes onto become her friend, advisor and lover.

Throughout the movie there are many comical scenes as the bridesmaids meet and quarrel over things they want to do, each having their own points of view. However, Annies biggest competitor is the attractive Helen played by Rose Berne. She comes onto the scene to help Lillian get married and is allowed to make all the crucial decisions which naturally makes Annie very jealous.

There are very memorable moments in the movie including the scene where both get in front of the stage in a pre-engagement party and fight to vie for more attention. In another scene she comes to another party that was organized by Helen and ransacks the whole place out of sheer jealousy and rage.

In one comical scene Annie desperately tries to attract the attention of her boyfriend police officer by breaking every rule she can think of with her erratic driving.

In one poignant moment, we see Annie rediscover herself and in true spirit reconciles with Helen, her best friend and boyfriend.

Happy Ending:
The story ends with a happy note where all concerned makes up the mishaps that ocurr throughout the movie and become more close to each other.

Final Words:

The movie is a very light-hearted comedy and is very well executed and the acting by the entire troupe of women are well worth cheering for. Annie in particular plays a very grounded person who becomes entangled in the wrong relationships but eventually finds happiness within herself.

Alfred Gough Gives Another Action Thriller: I am Number Four

    Movie: I am Number Four
    Year: 2011
    Director: D.J. Caruso
Stars: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant and Dianna Agron

    Snapshot of the story:

I am Number Four is loosely based on a romantic tale centred around a science-fiction theme but there is good on-screen chemistry between John Smith played by Alex Pettyfer and Sarah Hart played by Dianna Agron.

    Kick Start of Romance:
John (Alex) is from another planet and came to earth to escape the dreaded bounty hunters whose only mission is to wipe out his race. Under the pretence of a high school kid living with his other alien protector Henri who assumes his father role, they both move from one location to another to hide from the bounty hunters and locate the other ‘Numbers’. John is very adament in attending school and this is where he craves for romance and finds it in the form of Sarah (Dianna). He falls for Sarah but the course of their relationships is very rocky from the start since both are from different backgrounds and John has a greater mission to accomplish and cannot reveal his identity.

One very touching moment is where they both sit to see the many pictures that Sarah has taken with her camera and John picks up her personal diary. She becomes very uncomfortable with this to which he replies ‘You can see the rest of the world with your camera but we cannot see you’.

Sarah puts on a good performance as a placid school-girl looks almost introvert like with a very likeable quality and one that is not associated with other school girls of her age. This gives her more sensitivity and and an attraction that John instantly connects with.

    Twist in the Tale:
Through the ensuing battles that follows between John and the bounty hunters the director does an excellent job of shifting the emphasis away from their relationship where ultimately the prime cause of John’s mission becomes first and foremost and he must forego his relationship with Sarah. The audience is not left wanting as this is a natural cause of the different paths that John and Sarah take and is perfectly believable.

    On Screen Chemistry:
Both actors and their character counterparts were good choices for this movie and I especially liked the sensitivity and warmth played by Dianna Agron.

    Final Notes:
Although the movie was recently made (2011), it does not stand up to the monumental strides made by movies such as Avatar and the acting and the plot is a bit of a let down even though the special effects were pretty good. The special effects can be attributed to Michael Bay who was one of the producers of this movie and is famous for his hit movies such as Transformers.

Titanic: Immortal Love Story From James Cameron

    Movie: Titanic
    Director: James Cameron
    Year: 1997
    Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet

    Snapshot of Story:
The tale centers around the actual epic ship disaster of 1912 but James Cameron stylishly recreated the whole story around a romance in the best way imaginable.

    Kick Start of Romance:
Titanic on its maiden voyage left Southampton, England docks bound for New York carrying over 2,200 people. The ship was a marvel of technology and man’s achievement of the industrial era and was hailed as one of the great feats of its time. The Titanic was equipped with luxuries to serve the upper class as well as cabins and dormitories for the middle and lower class. The story centers around a couple who unexpectedly come from two polarised classes with Rose DeWitt Bukater played by Kate Winslet from an aristocratic background and Jack Dawson played by Leondardo DiCaprio coming from a working class.

What is interesting in this movie is another showing that love transcends all boundaries and ultimately passion lies in the true hearts of individuals no matter what their background. Rose is increasingly frustrated by the lavish and wasteful lifestyle of the wealthy that is surrounding her and is bored by the person she is set to marry. Along comes Jack with full of spirit and energy and both Rose and Jack hit it off instantly. He takes Rose through a whirlwind of exciting moments through the ship and introduces her to his fellow comrades. Rose is so taken back by the easiness and unselfish approach to life which was in stark contrast to the stuffy and haughty life she was used to. Her attraction to Jack heightens and the director Cameron gives his magic touch to the mesmerizing scenes along the gigantic ship coupled with the beautiful lyrics and song ‘My heart will go on..’ by Celine Dion.

Another highlight of the movie was the end where we go forwards in time to the present time and Rose at her old age throws the precious diamond back into the sea. It is a simple gesture of her great love for Jack who perished in the sinking of the Titanic.

    Twist in the Tale:
The twist in the tale happens towards the end where Rose throws back the much treasured diamond back into the sea, the very item that the expedition was launched in order to retrieve this diamond.

    On Screen Chemistry:
There is definitely great on-screen presence between the two stars. The whole movie makes these two characters very believable. The part where they unexpectedly meet on the ship and the part where they make love in one of the grand cars housed below deck.

    Happy Ending:
Unfortunately its a tragic ending where Jack is drowned in the ship wreck but keeps Rose always by his side and effectively saves her from drowning.

    Rating:
    8.5/10
