Movie Reviews and Ratings of Ishqiya

Storyline

Story of the flick starts with Krishna (played by Vidya Balan) convincing her hubby Vidyadhar, who is a local gang-leader to surrender to police. He pretends to agree, but dramatically dies in a gas explosion. Now Krishna is living a life of a widow, then enters in the movie a team of two criminals Iftikhar aka Khalujan (played by Naseeruddin Shah) and Razzak Hussain aka Babban (played by Arshad Warsi). Both of them ditch their job and try to escape from their boss who wants to catch them and bury them alive.

The duo land up in Vidyadhar’s house to seek refuge from there, the boss comes to learn that Vidyadhar is dead, Krishna gives them shelter and starts seducing both of them and pretends to be in love with both of them to achieve her secret goal. Khalujan and Babban also fall to her trap, but don’t express their feelings either to Krishna or each other. The intimate scene between Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi made a lot of controversies before the release. Krishna proposes both of them to kidnap Kamalkant Kakkar aka KK, partner of Vidyadhar in his illegal job. Story takes an interesting twist and turn when all of them come to know that Vidyadhar is still alive.

Last one hour of the movie is full of drama. Babban and Khalujan were blindfolded by the Vidyadhar’s men and taken to get killed, they manage to escape from there, and this fight sequence is ordinary and reminds us of the 90’s era. Finally, Vidyadhar gets killed and the trio has the last laugh.

Final Thoughts

Ishqiya is one time watch movie and does not have enough fire power to attract the audience for a second showing. It has an average story and except for some of the scene are very funny and has some vulgar dialogs. Highlight of the movie is Vidya Balan and her abusive dialogs which she does with ease and perfection. Naseeruddin Shah was fantastic as Khalujan and so did Arshan Warsi. Director Abhishek Chaubey did a fantastic job and made a fantastic first movie as debutant. Lyricist Gulzar good song and “Dil to Baccha Hai ji” and “Ibn-E-Batuta” were both chart toppers for months.

Rating

Ishqiya scores 6 out of 10 for its dialogs and Vidya Balan’s performance that many leading actress would not think of doing onscreen. Songs written by Gulzar and sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gave it extra mileage.

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Movie: Shree 420 (Mr. Cheat)
Director: Raj Kapoor
Year: 1955
Stars: Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Nadira, Nemo and Lalita Pawar

Snapshot of the Story

Raj Kapoor was the biggest and probably the first big show man of Indian cinema. He tried his luck in acting, direction and as producer. He was the man with special charisma that increased as his career grew.
Shree 420 was the super hit movie of the 50’s era with towering performances from Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Shree 420 is known for its classical romance and unforgettable romantic scenes in the rain where Raj Kapoor and Nargis share the same umbrella that gave it an exquisite feel. Raj Kapoor was the master in his art and was amongst the very few who knew what audience wanted and whatever he did created magic on the silver screen.

Raj Kapoor's Charisma in Shree 420

Raj Kapoor's Charisma in Shree 420

Storyline

The story of Shree 420 is of Raj (played by Raj Kapoor) a humble guy coming from a small town to the city of dreams in Bombay in search of a job. Shree 420 beautifully portrays how difficult is to survive in Bombay at that time and how Raj finds his way and does not hesitate to choose the right path when realized that he is in the wrong company.

Raj is full of enthusiasm, self belief and has an innocent charm about him. But he takes no time to learn that living in Bombay he needs to be a sharp and cunning man. Bombay is the place he finds his true love. Vidya (Nargis) is a poor girl and takes care of her parents by earning her bread and butter as a school teacher.

Struggling to find a decent job for himself, Raj meets a businessman Sonchand (Nemo) and gets attracted by his luxurious lifestyle. Raj starts to believe that he also can become rich, but he is not aware about the Sonchand’s evil intentions. On the other hand, Sonchand offers Raj to work on his new project. Sonchand is working on the project where we would be building homes for poor people available at very cheap rates. Raj soon finds himself as a victim of dirty tricks by Sonchand and there are no real intentions by Sonchand who only wants to make money and run away with it. Raj feels sorry for what he did and goes to those poor people and hands over the bond papers to them preventing them from becoming homeless.

When the story is revolving around the intense drama it also has the romantic angle to it as Raj and Vidya fall in love with each other, Nargis played the role of Vidya and looked stunning. Her femininity, expressions and her innocence only shouts the fact that she is born to act and with release of “Shree 420” Indian cinema has witnessed the birth of new superstar in the form of Nargis.

Sharkar-Jaikishan's romantic music

Sharkar-Jaikishan's romantic music

Final Thoughts

“Shree 420” did turn out to be the super hit movie with a simple story and towering performances of Raj Kapoor who looked very much a small town guy and has that innocent charm about him. Nargis was excellent and her beauty and eyes did much coupled with her dialogs. Shree 420 is directed by non other than Raj Kapoor himself, which is quite an achievement to be in the shoes of both an actor and director. Raj Kapoor was the only other actor in the Indian cinema and probably in the world who played this dual role in his career. Legendary Shankar – Jaikishan created the vibrant and romantic music of the decade and the song “Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua” still fresh in everyone’s memory and “Mera Joota hai Japani ye Patlun englistani Sar pe lal topi rusi par phir bhi dil hai Hindustani” became a trade mark of the movie aka “Wearing torn Japanese shoes, English trousers, a red Russian cap but with an Indian heart”

Raj gets an offer to move to Sydney for designing a new game and he accepts the proposal thinking that Radhika (Bipasha Basu) is a modern girl who won’t mind a breakup. But it was opposite of Raj’s expectation as Radhika (Bipasha Basu) becomes ready to sacrifice her career and move to Australia with him. Raj tries hard to avoid her, but she disagrees. Final Thoughts

The Story of Bachna Ae Haseeno revolves around Raj and his flamboyance. Romance of Minisha Lamba and Ranbir Kapoor was the best of all as they both looked good onscreen. Sadly the story is quite monotonous and after the first affair it becomes predictable. Director Siddharth Anand tried his best but could not make it a hit mainly due to the weak storyline. Vishal – Shekar created the versatile music by creating the retro version of 70’s “Bachna Ae Haseeno” by Rishi Kapoor.

    Movie: Dev D

    Year: 2009
Stars: Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill and Kalki Koechlin

    Snapshot of the story
Dev D is the modern version of Devdas written by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay, but the characters and situations are quite similar to the original Devdas screenplay. Dev loves his childhood friend Paro. But due to some suspicion on the character of Paro, Dev insults her and as a result Paro unable to bear the insult gets married to some other person. Now, heartbroken Dev becomes addicted to alcohol and drugs. One day he visits the prostitute named Chanda and then he falls for her. Climax of the movie was made different (intentionally) from the original Devdas.

    Storyline

Dev (played by Abhay Deol) is a son of rich Punjabi businessman. He and Paro are childhood sweethearts. Later on when both of them grow up, Dev goes to London for his higher studies. But distance increases the love between them and their love blossoms. They try to be near to each other with the help of communication such as letter, e-mails, telephones, etc.

Dev returns to Chandigarh to meet Paro. Both of them express their love for each other with some dark romantic scenes. Dev comes to know that Paro has an affair with another person that turns out to be just a rumor, hurtful Paro gets married to someone else decided by her parents. Tormented by Paro’s wedding, Dev has started seeking solace in alcohol and drugs and becomes the regular visitor to hookup at Chanda’s place. Chanda has been disowned by her family after her port MMS hit the internet. Dev finds solace with Chanda and she also starts loving him, but due to her profession gets rejected by Dev. But after spending few months lonely he realizes that he loves Chanda and they both start living together.

    Final Thoughts

Dev D is a modern version of Devdas the change in the story was expected, but there was not much change is the actual storyline and anyone who watched the old version would definitely get bored. There was only a change in the climax. Director Anurag Kashyap tried to make something different, but ended up doing something that was not appreciated by audience or critics. Music of the movie is also good and but never the talk of the town. Abhay Deol did a good job as Dev but that was not good enough to make it a hit.

    Rating
Dev D scores 5 out of 10, it is very sad to see the good story is wasted like this. Having originated from the original Devdas movie, the romanticism of this version is let down on the big screen.
