In part 1 we discussed how the online dating scene can be somewhat a ’shock’ for some people especially women who have just started using this medium to find potential suitors.
Preparing yourself with some knowledge gleaned from here can help you stay on the right track without becoming too frustrated by the whole process of online dating. As mentioned previously, the accessibility of the online medium does open the doors to many people with many different backgrounds and personalities. Think of it this way, you are entering a night club where there are hardly any bouncers at the door and everyone is pretty much ‘good to go’ in this establishment of meeting like minded singles.
So you can imagine the types of people that can be found in the ‘bar’ from all age groups, orientations, religion, beliefs, sex gender, even some people with just a passing interest in dating can be found here.
It would be unfair to say there are no screening of any kind going on at the dating site ‘door’, some sites like Jumpdates.com do in fact screen all new members by hand, so only a good and serious crowd with real intentions stay on the site.

Online dating has come a long way and offers the potential for singles to meet other singles online and creates a very accessible channel to meet people and much more so than the traditional way of meeting people such as bars, clubs etc.
The proliferation of many dating sites some 100% free and others a monthly paid service have come as a result of this insatiable demand, however, one needs to treat this entire online dating scene with some respect. In the same way that women are wary about meeting strangers at bars or single events, the same applies to the online scene. The online pool will consist of many types of people especially men and depending on the types of dating sites that you sign-up to, you may come across many men that are not suited or anywhere near to your liking.
Because of the ease at which people can throw up an online profile, it means you need to dig deeper than just the profile to ensure that your initial impression of this person is qualified and not over or under rated.
In part 2 we will look closer into how to spot signs that can tell you the difference between a good and a bad online dating profile.

We have covered the many ways of using the search engines especially Google to locate great free dating websites and to be observant in areas where it will save you a great deal of time and effort down the line.
The recommendations and suggestions noted in this series are by no means a complete set and you can turn to many other channels to refine your search and save you precious time. Some of these include going to the library and looking at ‘online dating’ related material on this subject and also don’t be shy about asking the clerk to help you.
As it just happens, the public library is taking an interest in this area by presenting useful seminars similar to this event I have reported earlier, Looking for love? Start at the public library.
Finally, don’t overlook the obvious, for example, your daily encounters with other people who can not only help you with referrals to quality dating sites but may even introduce you to singles who are in the same boat. There are a number of websites you can go to determine the traffic levels to the online dating site and these include Alexa, Compete, Ranking just to name a few.
In the Alexa report, you get a general idea of the website ranking overall in traffic rankings and a position of 200k or under is considered good. Look to the worldwide position to get an idea of numbers coming from rest of the world and using the website.
Compete.com allows you to compare two websites against each other to determine the traffic levels for the two.
Ranking.com allows you to see also how the dating sites compare with each other in their own category ie. matchmaking site, or personal site etc. Alexa typically gives you the overall site performance relative to ALL the sites available on the net.

We went through a few ways of evaluating a genuine dating site and not just simply taking it from it’s face value. These included browsing other parts of the site, checking footer links as well as going to Google and typing the domain (site) name.
There is an additional tool at our disposal and this is the whois look up tool, simply type ‘whois’ in the search box and you have a list of sites where you can look up a domain name and see who the site is registered to and other information. This can be a good way to determine the age of the domain, country it has been registered to, company registered under and so forth.
Next we will look at traffic data of websites to determine the traffic levels to the website and hence an idea of the number of visitors to the website.
