<<< Why is communication is more important to us than it has ever been - Part 8
Our previous generations have all lived in a community where some of the marvels of modern technology were not available to them such as the ubiquitous TV and phone we now take for granted.
People in general interacted more within the community because they didn’t have these distractions.
Today, we operate in a self-driven entity like a ‘unit’ which governs how we work and play in our daily lives.

we are witnessing a proliferation of communication devices
As a result, we have less personal contact with other people and sometimes we shy away from that except in the case of say buying groceries, talking to doctors, lawyers etc.
However, this is also changing with time, where we are now shopping and buying online, getting business and personal advise online and even having our medical queries delivered online.
Some aspects of this change have been designed for convenience and they most certainly save time, ie. a trip to the shops, making an appointment etc. However, from a relationship point of view we need interact at the social level and continue to hone our social skills.

<<< The language of love - Body language and it’s potent power - part 12
You will find people crowded around different parts of the establishment, some next to the bar, some sitting down, some near the music area, dancing and chatting, while others are in the kitchen rummaging for food and drinks etc.
If you catch someone’s eyes, you want to know if it that person is interesting to you and whether to pursue this further.
You have to first establish whether this person is interested in YOU. In house parties, you can expect people to be polite and chat with you without the fear of being brushed off.
However, if you are at a public establishment such as a bar, you need to tread carefully.
Here, people can ignore you and turn you down very easily because there are no common point of reference.
This is where your knowledge of body language can come in very useful.

Let’s assume that you saw someone that you like and you want to gauge whether that person is interested in you or not and so you can go and chat to her.
You should start looking for tell tale signs in body language, movement & gestures, eye contact and other subtle signs.
Some of the cues of interest can be very obvious such as a look that is ‘longer than normal’ followed by a smile.
However, do not assume that a smile is a sure sign of interest, it could be a simple and polite gesture on her part only because your eyes met.

Again the social environment you are in is more reflective of this.
For example, if you are in a public bar, the smile can be construed as an interest because most women in that kind of venue will not go about smiling at every man, otherwise she may end up with a trail of men behind her.
Unless she likes that kind of attention, it isn’t normal in every day life.
In a house party where their maybe a common associate or friend, people especially women are more likely to drop their guards since it is considered a more ‘safer’ environment.
To be certain that there is genuine interest from the onlooker, you may just simply walk up to the individual and try your luck. But the point is, why bother if you can actually filter out those who are showing genuine interest in you.

Besides you only have a limited time on your hands and the approach you want to take has to be effective in opening up as many potential prospects.
Also, there will be lesser chance of you getting turned down using the body language approach and you don’t want to feel defeated too early in the night.
The trick is to read the ‘hidden’ signals that are conveyed to you from afar and this entails watching subtle movements of the body, face, legs etc.
As mentioned earlier, a ‘look’ can tell you right away if that person is interested in you and other times you need to read much more.
