Dr. Dato’s Brief:
This article talks about the merits of online dating and is followed by several people contributing to their online dating experiences.
I would agree with some of the posts that says that you cannot put down online dating because of the types of people that you meet on the sites. Like anything you need to wade through all the ‘undesirables’ to find your ideal match. Several commentators have found success with online dating whereas others have given up trying.
The bottom line is that online dating can work but you need to be alert to the fact that the medium of online dating allows potentially anyone socially inept, rich, poor, sociopaths, young, old etc. to register to the sites. Therefore, you are likely to find an entire community of people on the sites and you simply need to filter through them patiently to find the right person.
I think some people are possibly too quick to judge and give up easily. We tend to live in a world where instant gratification seems to be the norm.

are we too quick to judge online dating sites?

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
This is a very useful documentation which talks about the pitfalls of paid dating sites and the increase in complaints received by users regarding many of the issues related to such sites. Some of them being the following;
- dissatisfaction with the quantity of date matches, incompatibility with resulting matches
- high pressure sales tactics used by sales representatives
- complaints alleging automatic renewal of dating service contracts and the inability to cancel
The post also recommends to look up the dating service provider through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and check company’s information. I did a search for eharmony and match and there were some interesting statistics on the ongoing complaints received by users.

BBB is a very useful resource to find out about a company regarding user complaints

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Here the article points to the real dangers of meeting someone for the first time on a date and a woman becoming a victim of sexual assault. In truth, the incident could very well happen if the two had met outside of dating for example in a club, restaurant or any other public place.
There are several steps one should take to ensure the safety of the individual whenever you go out for a date with a stranger for the first time. I will go further and add the following;
- Meet in a public place
- Tell someone or friend you can trust where you are going and ask them to call you later in the evening
- Follow your instincts (these are primeval forces in all of us that has protected men and women through the ages)
- Do not give out any of your personal information
- Before you go out on any dates, find out as much as you can about the person, talk to them on the phone
For more information on online dating safety, you can read one of our earlier post here.

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Here is an interesting post on the subject of computers and gadgets which are consuming more and more peoples time and using these as communication devices to contact other people. The effect of this as the MIT Professor Sherry Turkle points out is that it is making us all “Less Human”.
Her argument is that we are building relationships with computers and technology and the more dependent we become on technology the less human we become.
I have actually reported this in my article “Why communication is more important to us than it has ever been” where the effects of technology may impair our lifestyles to communicate effectively with other humans. The long-term repercussions of placing technology between humans could potentially have dire consequences to mankind’s evolution and something we cannot ignore.
I will review more of Sherry Turkle’s work and provide my own account of some of the implications and importance of this subject matter to all of us humans.
