Dr. Dato’s Brief:

Talk about spelling mistakes!

The post I made previously talked about grammar and spelling mistake and how to avoid them for the sake of getting more interest in your dating profile. Unfortunately this post by prfire needs a lesson on that too, they had spelt competition incorrectly, but don’t worry, I have corrected it here.

The post talks about a competition organized by the new dating site called Earthrumble.com which I had previously reported in my Dr Dato Blog, The secret online dating site.

If you login into Earthrumble between the times of 12.00 pm - 4.50pm on Thursday 24th February, the first 10 Earthrumble sign ups of the hour will receive a free 5 pounds iTunes voucher. Unfortunately, the competition is only open to UK residents only. You have 5 chances of winning on the hours allocated:

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

This kind of posts seems to be coming up time and time again emphasizing the importance of proper grammar, spelling errors, use of abbreviations and things like that.

If you have read some of my previous posts not directly related to this subject, you will see that the improper usage of the English language can have a negative effect on the part of the reader. Here are my tips for improving in this area where you can write great profiles and maintaining good communication that will have more appeal with your fellow readers. We all want this because its going to get us more dates!

Firstly, it is important to understand that no one has perfect command of the English language with perfect grammar and mistakes are made all the time. In fact, I make the common mistakes such as typing ‘recepient’ instead of the correct spelling ‘recipient’.

The good thing about our online browsers today is that it has a built-in spell detector which you may have noticed when you type a word, it underlines it in red if it has detected a spelling error in that word. I can see the word above ‘recepient’ appearing with a red underline as I write this post in Wordpress. You should pay attention to this and correct it right away, especially if it looks blatant. If you are unable to find the correctly spelt word, just go to Google and copy that word and Google will give you suggestions, its that easy!

However, I noticed that sometimes the built-in spell checkers for browsers does not detect errors such as the case here when I misspelt ‘maintaining’ with ‘maintaing’ which was not detected by a red underline. When I scanned back to that sentence, that is how I spotted it.

The best way to ensure complete accuracy of your writing is to feed it through a dedicated word processor such as MS Word and even some of the online applications such as Google word document. By the way, I am not trying to advocate Google’s products or services, I just think that they have very good tools available to the average Joe like you and me and it is freely available.

Here is another tip that will definitely improve your writing a great deal and this is to write and write about anything that interests you. In this way, you will get used to thinking about the proper structuring of sentences, use of words, typo errors and they instinctively improve your writing style over time.

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

This a post by Allyson Kenning who wrote a post about her Valentines day’s experience with an online dating site and her own personal views of the subject. I personally do not agree with some of her statements made which seems to be more in frustration with herself and is typical of most people who blame the system rather than looking more closely at themselves. Normally, I am not very critical of people’s views but on this occasion I needed to be so, readers can find some usefulness in the material.

Her first gripe was that she had received two messages from men who clearly couldn’t spell and one who wanted to know what she was doing ‘tonight’. Naturally this kind of communication will not come across well to a lady of good standing or most people for that matter.

She also recollects some of her bad experiences with men who weren’t quite up to the profile and were late in meeting her and on top of that lied about their age.

At the end of her post she decides to put up a disclaimer of all the men she does NOT want in her life and eventually abandons the whole online dating scene together to spend more time with her cat and wait for Prince Charming.

My Brief:
She clearly needs to take a good look at her negative personality because that would be the very thing that is standing in the way of good and bad men.

She makes a big fuss about the spelling errors in men’s communication. Personally in a message some abbreviations are allowed but then again she needs to look at her own post. The title of her post are all in CAPs which to most people seems like you are shouting.

She claims that she will wait for Prince Charming, but I am sorry to say, you have been looking for Prince Charming all this time. Why? because you do not make the effort to seek out the other men, you are reactive to the situation. If you did a search on the dating site for men, I am pretty sure you will find men who are not only stellar in their English but probably intellectual enough to give you a run for your money. But then again, why would they want someone who is negative in their outlook of life?

My conclusion, please perk yourself up and look at the real world which is your own self and then decide how you can improve and not the world changing for you. I find this piece of information helps me in my daily life a great deal.

Forget the flowers, chocolates, send an ‘I lv U’ text instead? - Online Dating Briefs by Dr. Dato

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

According to this post texting and the social networks have changed our behavior and understanding of sex, relationships and dating.

The poll conducted on 1,200 men and women revealed the following;

  • 75% percent men admitted that they constantly checked an ex-lovers Facebook page
  • 5% said that the compulsion of social networking site was so great that they would break off sex to see who was responding
  • 43% men and 27% women admitted to being dumped via sms
  • 65% said they have been asked out by a text and 49% through facebook

It would seem that in this digital age the tools available for dating has become widespread and it’s not surprising that many dates emanate from texting as well as dates ending through texting. Despite these tools, we all connect ‘humanistically’ with each other and how these devices will alter our way of thinking is worthy of further investigation.

eHarmony launches $7m media pitch - Online Dating Briefs by Dr. Dato

Dr. Dato’s Brief:

There is hot competition brewing up in Down Under where eharmony is launching a $7m media blitz and doing catching up with the likes of match, lavalife and spiceoflife.

The largest subscription based dating site in Australia is spiceoflife.com.au which is owned by Fairfax Media. Eharmony brands itself as a “relationship” site and claims to be a matchmaker of 271 marriages per day in the US alone. Naturally, from the figures we have seen in the increase in dating site revenue last year, there is going to be a more aggressive push for subscribers and of course much competition.

Expect to see much more adverts appearing on TV from these companies, although I would really like to see more watchable commercials similar to the Geico or Progressive adverts.
