There have been extensive studies done on the behavior of men and women when they go on a date and what is attractive and appealing to each gender. Everyone has different tastes but there some common traits that are universal to both men and women and this applies to the profile picture of someone on their dating profile.

The saying that a picture says a thousand words is to some extent true and for a smiling face the interpretation of the character of the person can be viewed very differently by anyone viewing the photo. In the case of a male gazing at a smiling female photo on their profile can be interpreted differently depending on the overall facial expression.

For example, if she is smiling and has her eyes frowning or smiling and has her lips puckered. The smiling face is definitely one that attracts many males to females but on the other hand a smiling face of a guy is interpreted differently by women.

An overly big smile by a guy can be interpreted as a man who is quick to please and possibly weak in character showing not much strength. A very slight smile can come across as someone who is not trustworthy and likely to be not so honest.

For the men, its generally better not to have a smile but to appear more aloof which strikes an air of mystery about the person which women find attractive.
