How important is complacency to dating relationships? - Dr Dato’s Brief
Tuesday, June 7th, 2011
The definition of complacency in the merriam-webster dictionary reads as follows;
’self-satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies’
In the reference dictionary online, the meaning reads…
‘a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation,condition, etc.’
I believe complacency is a part of human nature that can lead to many issues arising in relationships and dating. It is in my opinion, also the primary reason why many women have complaints agains their male counterparts. Without sounding sexist or stereo-typing, females tend to be better guarded against complacency and they are more likely then males to make change, initiate change especially in the matters of relationships. It is probably the reason why women may sound ‘nagging’ to their partner but in actual fact trying to keep the relationship moving forward with actions and longer term interest. It may stem from the biological ingrained quality built into women and expecting their partner to provide food and shelter which can only be done with action.
Anyways, complacency in any walks of life can be bad not just in dating relationships but in businesses and our daily lives. It can suppress creativity, the sense of action and determination and most important all the evolution of one’s own self.
