Saturday, December 24th, 2011
Movie: Rockstar
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Time: 2011
Stars: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri (debutant) and late Shammi Kapoor
Snapshot of the story
Yet another love story from Imtiaz Ali camp but bit different from his earlier romantic story like Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal. The movie is about a Delhi based college student Janardan Jakhar aka Jordan who dreams of becoming a “Rockstar” someday. He gets suggestion from his friend that true music can evolve only from the broken heart, and he tries to get his heart broken from a girl Heer who has done this many time with other guys. But as fate has decided something else they fall for each other and then separate because their ways were different. Rest of story shows us the music evolving from the broken heart and how deep was the love between Jordan and Heer.
Storyline
Story of the movie starts with a nerdy college student from Delhi Janardan aka Jordan (played by Ranbir Kapoor), who has fond of music and dreams to become a Rockstar someday. Once while sitting with his best friend he is told that “tute hue dil ses hi sangeet nikalta hai” means true music evolves only from the broken heart. Now Jordan tries to get his heart broken from a girl named Heer who is famous for ditching guys.
On meeting Heer first he gets insulted by her but later on both of them gets befriended and slowly starts loving each other. But as their ways were different they have to get separated. Heer gets married in Prague and Jordan becomes a Rockstar (as his heart is now actually broken). Then there are few superb songs from A R Rahman and beautiful camerawork by Anil Mehta.
Now the story gets a turn when Jordan gets a chance to go for a music concert at Prague. There he starts searching Heer and finally meets her. Confronting each other both Heer and Jordan feels refreshed and becomes exciting. There are few romantic scenes that show the love between both of them still alive even after so many years.
Final Thoughts
Rockstar is emotional love story where Janardan Jakhad becomes Jordan. Ranbir Kapoor acting was awesome in the movie. Nargis Fakhri is impressive in her debut movie more with her beauty. Music composed by Oscar award winner A.R. Rahman and songs sung by ace singer Mohit Chauhan create the magic as they made the chart topper songs. Rockstar certainly established Ranbir Kapoor in the industry and gave Nargis Fakhri the perfect start needed.
Rating
Rockstar scored 7 out of 10 with rocking performance from Ranbir Kapoor. Director Imtiaz Ali has proved him as versatile director but he still need to come out of his emotional love story theme. Even though Rockstar failed to bring expected audience but it silence all his critics.

Friday, December 9th, 2011
Movie: Socha Na Tha (Unexpected)
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Year: 2005
Stars: Abhay Deol, Ayesha Takia and Apoorva Jha
Snapshot of the story
Socha Na Tha is a story of a guy who is going to marry a girl selected by his parents but rejects her and wants to marry his Catholic girlfriend which is unacceptable to his parents. While he is trying to convince his parents to let him marry her, he finds himself in love with the girl his parents chose for him. Story takes a sweet and funny twist as it finally reaches it’s climax.
Storyline
Viren (played by Abhay Deol) is going to marry Aditi (played by Ayesha Takia), a girl selected by his parents being their friends daughter. But Viren is in love with a Catholic girl named Karen (played by Apoorva Jha) and wants to marry her. He confides with Aditi and both of them arrive at a pact that Viren would refuse the marriage proposal with Aditi.
The rejection by Viren creates a rift between the two families which triggers a war of words. At the same time Viren continues to date Karen and proposes her for marriage, the response of which is positive. Then he meets Karen’s parents and they also agree, but when they go for the permission from his parents they disapprove the match.
In the ensuing chaos, Viren also continues to meet Aditi, even though there are no strings attached. Both of them feel free to talk and share their feelings with each other. Then there’s a dramatic turnaround in the story when Viren realizes that his heart is now beating for Aditi. On the other side another dramatic turnaround takes place and his parents agree to make Karen their daughter–in–law. Now Viren is in another mess, for now he wants to marry Aditi and not Karen.
Final Thoughts
Socha Na Tha is small budget movie and show that it does not need to be the big budget movie to be a block buster hit. The movie gets its appeal just because of the unpredictable situations woven with a good story narrated by Imtiaz Ali. Socha Na Tha is good in the screenplay and all the actors give off their best. Credit goes to Imtiaz Ali for making a simple story very compelling. Climax of the movie was a bit predictable which can be ignored sijnce the movie overall was much fun to watch. Music is not the selling point for this movie and also not really needed because of the brilliant direction of Imtiaz Ali.
Rating
Socha Na Tha scores 7 out of 10 for its simple but engaging story. Both Ayesh Takia and Abhay Deol was a newcomer and did a fantastic job. We would like to add 1 more star just for their outstanding performance making the rating 8 out of 10.

First half of the movie is the best part of the movie and makes the audiences glued to their seat. Fresh story, good screenplay, charisma of Kareena Kapoor and impressive Sahid Kapur made it hit and Music by Pritam was icing on the cake. Pritam has did a successfully experiment with music as the fusion of Indian and western and made popular within young crowd. All in all a good entertaining movie with few hick up there and there this can easily be ignored.
