Article Subject: 24. Understanding more about online dating websites - Whois
Dr. Dato’s Brief:
We went through a few ways of evaluating a genuine dating site and not just simply taking it from it’s face value. These included browsing other parts of the site, checking footer links as well as going to Google and typing the domain (site) name.
There is an additional tool at our disposal and this is the whois look up tool, simply type ‘whois’ in the search box and you have a list of sites where you can look up a domain name and see who the site is registered to and other information. This can be a good way to determine the age of the domain, country it has been registered to, company registered under and so forth.
Next we will look at traffic data of websites to determine the traffic levels to the website and hence an idea of the number of visitors to the website.

Article Subject: 10. Make your search work for you
Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Now the ’snippets’ of the search results page (SERPs) that you want to look at and make sure to read what is there before clicking to your heart’s content.
The snippet has not come about by random, there is some logic to the way it has been structured.
The first line which is in bigger text than the body of the snippet are the exact words pulled from the title tag of the home page of the website displayed. So assume that you had a ‘free dating website’, then you could choose a title like ‘100% Free Dating Site’ or more specifically ‘Free Dating Site for Seniors’.
The next two lines of the snippet are text that has been pulled off the home page content of the website and usually resides in the meta tags of the html code of the page.
The third line contains information to ‘quick links’ that are accessible from the home page and displayed here on the home page for quick and direct access to the points of interest on the other parts of the site.
The fourth line is the actual link of the site, basically the domain name or url of the website and is followed by the ‘Cached’ and ‘Similar links. The Cached link provides a snapshot of the website at a previous point in time taken by Google and the Similar link shows you other related sites that have references from the snippet site.

Using search engines to locate good free dating sites - Part 9 - Online Dating Briefs by Dr. Dato

Article Subject: 9. Searching is the key to great things
Dr. Dato’s Brief:
When you typed in ‘free dating sites’, you will see a page with probably about 10 listings unless you have the returned set (SERP) to be at 100, in which case you will have hundred listed in one page. If you are used to scrolling and scanning quickly, then you may find increasing the displayed result sets in the advanced search section will be beneficial to you.
As we have learnt, the main area of focus are the ‘organic’ results that have been returned by Google. You will notice that each result or ’snippet’ as Matt Cutts of Google likes to put it points to information directly related to a website. The fortunate few of the websites that appear in the organic listings have been very well analyzed by Googles search engine algorithm and placed there as the most important matches representative of those group of keywords.
If you do believe in Googles ‘faith’ in delivering those results then you only need to go through a handful of those websites on those pages to find the website you are looking for. From statistics of user searches, it has been shown that most users do in fact click through the links that appear on the home page and a small minority will go through the other pages.
I would recommend to examine the websites in probably 3 pages of the results.

Article Subject: 6b. The rudiments of a search engine
Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Previously we discussed how search engines have become a common part of our daily lives and for many people it has changed the way we we work. For example, when doing research or troubleshooting we turn to the search engine to locate not only the correct website but the actual page that contains what we are seeking.
Such granularity is what made search engines so useful and powerful and to understand some of it’s inner workings help us to be more efficient and productive with the application. In essence there is a lot going on under the ‘hood’ of the search engine and what it presents to the user is deceptively simple.
If you look at Fig. 1, you will see the structure of the Google search results page and what is represented in the various sections of the page. Essentially there are three core sections and they are very clearly defined as ’sponsored listings’, ‘organic search results’ and ‘adwords paid listings’.
The sponsored listing is where you will only see at the most three adverts above the organic results section and this is because Google is true to it’s original motto of providing an unbiased result sets based on it’s unique search algorithms. This is the reason why Google still retains the top position in search engines because it caters to the end user and if it ended up serving the interests of the advertisers it will lose the world wide audience.
The organic listings is the area that you will be most likely be interested in because this is the section where the ‘best’ matches are found based on the keywords that you typed in. These are the results coming directly from the heart of the Googles engine and is based on it’s unique search engine to give you the ‘end user’ with the most relevant and useful matches possible.
To the right is the Adwords listing that is available to anyone wishing to advertise on this space and compete for keywords bids through the Paid Per Click advertising (PPC). However the organic listing is the most important section where you will be conducting your searches to find the best free dating sites.
