<<< Appearance and dress sense really count in dating - part 5
It became apparent that we needed to set aside a budget for the new clothing look that I was going to adorn and had no idea what that was going to be like but kept an open mind.
Our first trip took us to Macys and I was surprised by his approach to selecting clothes were very different to mine.
Typically, I would take time and just do some simple ‘window shopping’ first and then decide what to purchase.
My friend was quite methodical and precise as to what kind of look I should have and his shopping style was that of someone darting to one shelf to another knowing exactly what he wanted.

Within about 10 minutes, he had selected a shirt and pants for me to try out in the fitting rooms.
I put them on and looked into the mirror and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
We then proceeded to do the remainder of the shopping and included a pair of shoes, belt and some expensive after-shave and balm.
I found myself asking some very pertinent and personal questions to myself following this episode.
I admittedly ‘dressed down’ thinking that I was going to draw undue attention to myself when wearing clothes that my appear ‘too flashy’.
Hence, I would ignore such clothes from my shopping list when I usually go out shopping for clothes.
The other point is, I also dress more for comfort.

<<< Appearance and dress sense really count in dating - part 7
Several key lessons were learned from this shopping venture with my friend.
(1) I found that ‘dressing up’ was not a big deal as I had expected and my previous concern that ‘people’ somehow thought you were too pretentious wearing such clothes was somewhat becoming a myth.
(2) The new dress code had helped me have a renewed sense of confidence and I did notice people unconsciously taking me more seriously at work.
(3) I could easily tell that some women were drawn to this kind of look and also the smell of my new cologne where I received some positive feedback.
(4) I found that it is not only the clothes but also the style and shape of the clothes relative to your body shape that are important.

So the lessons that we can take away from my experience as well as help other men is that to be very open mind to other people’s suggestions and don’t have fixated by one look that you have held for years.
Our thinking is shaped by many years of habits without paying any attention to it as much and this thinking may not be the views shared by other people.
Clothes fashion changes significantly over time, and if you don’t believe me, just pull up some movies going back 10, 20, 40 years and you will see how people dress.
You will also see that people’s hairstyling changes significantly over time.

I had a tendency to wear loose fitting clothes and my friend insisted that I was slim and I should wear clothes that were similar to my physique.
I wore pants that were more slim fit and they definitely looked good on me and made me look younger too.
When I purchased the clothes and took it back to show some of my other friends, they too were extremely surprised and pleased by my new look.
I would say it took a few days for me to feel totally comfortable with the new look but after that it was like second nature to me.
One person had also pointed out that an ironed-shirt can make all the difference and I tended to agree.
