Dr. Dato’s Brief:
This is detailed post on a dating survey conducted by the Oxford University on a representative sample of 24,000 men and women 18 countries. Although many insights has been gathered by the co-authors Dr Bernie Hogan and Professor William Dutton, I will highlight only some essential findings that are useful to our readers.
- 1 in 3 people who use the internet have visited online dating sites to find love
- Out of the 24,000 people studied only 6% used the dating service back in 1997 with 30% using it in 2009
- Surprisingly middle aged men/women (aged 40-69) are likely users of the dating service
- People who use the online dating sites are much more likely to recommend to other people
- Social networks and chat rooms have played a significant role in the online dating scene
- Despite the growth of online dating, many people still meet through offline channels such as events, bars etc.
- The most active online daters appear to be in Brazil with the least active in Japan

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
The theme appears to be ‘online dating statistics’ today for no apparent reason.
Here the post goes into length to bring us actual figures related to dating and I must warn the reader to keep in mind the real statistics and facts about this data. Firstly, it is very difficult to gauge real data unless we take a good representative samples from the online daters and assume that everyone of them had told the truth.
This data has apparently been compiled by OnlineSchool but when searching in Google, I couldn’t locate any body that handles statistical data in online dating. Maybe, you the reader can find something.
In summary the data compares the age group of daters and how members tend to lie about their age, height and weight and income as reported in my last post. One interesting fact was that 1 in 3 women who meet men online engage in sex in their first encounter. This probably explains why men and women rush to have their first meeting following their online conversation, maybe?
In any case, I would take the facts and figures with a grain of salt.

Dr. Dato’s Brief:
Here is another interesting article on the statistics of online dating.
As you know, online dating is booming judging by the recent takeover of OkCupid by Match.com and the boost in Match.com earnings from subscribers. In short, we are nowhere near saturation point and more people are looking online to find their partner.
The age group that go to these sites typically range from 18 all the way to 55+ with the biggest proportion in the 18-34 age bracket (almost 50%).
Although looks can play a big part in finding your partner, the article says that 86% women and 67% men prefer personality over looks which puts men in very much favor of finding their partner.
The three biggest fibs that are repeated in peoples online profiles are age, weight and income, which comes as no surprise.
