<<< Why is communication is more important to us than it has ever been - Part 4
To give you an example, all of us have experienced an unexplainable situation where we feel that someone behind us is watching, even though they were not within our peripheral vision.
And surely enough, as we turn our heads around we do see someone who is looking at us.
How does someone explain this phenomenon?
Although mankind has progressed in science and technology, we have not yet discovered the unknown ‘force’ that comes into play that explains the above phenomenon.
Perhaps it’s an unknown ‘force’ or radio wave or something that has not yet been measurable with any known scientific instruments. But in any case, the point is that human interaction is far more complex than we care to think and it would be incorrect of us to think that it is ONLY a collection of verbal, body gestures or eye contact etc. which are known to us.

The above argument supports the fact that the best form of effective communication over anything available to us these days is the direct communication between each other.
Who is to tell that this simple act communication has the potential for changes within us that cannot be described or measured in any way?
We all know that as children who are dependent on their parents for growth and development, the communication part or lack off it has a profound effect on the child and also shape their lives into adulthood.
We have seen that when we communicate via digitally we often feel frustrated that the other party has not understood what we were trying to say or completely misunderstood us.

It is all very easy to say that communication is key to all relationships be it personal or in the work place, but we haven’t clearly defined what this truly means and how it affects us.
Ideally in communication between two people, we want to get the message across completely without ambiguity, misunderstanding and with less effort as possible.
If one thinks about it, this can be hard task to achieve especially if we are translating our thoughts into meaningful words and conveying the message to the appropriate person.
It may appear simple for very routine tasks that are broken down to very basic elements, but in other cases it can be more difficult than one thinks.

We are witnessing how some aspects of human interaction that is slowly being eroded in time and undermined by the technological advances in digital communication.
Another factor that is slowly coming into the mainstream involves voice/video communication.
Surely, the face-to-face communication over the internet is a pretty good attempt of the real thing, right?
However, if you look at the history of this type of communication, it was a major hype as far back as late 1990s but yet to this day it still has not attained a strong footing in industry as anticipated.
There maybe many reasons for this including the specialist knowledge to using such devices but I believe at the end of the day the human contact is the only complete and vital form of communication.
Witness none of the slow down in people traveling for business, meeting families, vacations etc. despite the proliferation of such helpful devices.

Our previous generations have all lived in a community where some of the marvels of modern technology were not available to them such as the ubiquitous TV and phone we now take for granted.
People in general interacted more within the community because they didn’t have these distractions.
Today, we operate in a self-driven entity like a ‘unit’ which governs how we work and play in our daily lives.
As a result, we have less personal contact with other people and sometimes we shy away from that except in the case of say buying groceries, talking to doctors, lawyers etc.
However, this is also changing with time, where we are now shopping and buying online, getting business and personal advise online and even having our medical queries delivered online.
Some aspects of this change have been designed for convenience and they most certainly save time, ie. a trip to the shops, making an appointment etc. However, from a relationship point of view we need interact at the social level and continue to hone our social skills.
