The online dating industry is booming and last year 2011 we saw a proliferation of new online dating sites coming into the market including many free dating sites. This year (2012) there appears to be a lull in the sector of new online dating websites coming into the market. I mainly put this down to the ‘fever’ that takes hold when venture capital firms and pundits drum up interest in this area, so much so that would-be entrepreneurs arrive in droves. Part of the reason for the big hike in 2011 was essentially due to the bigger online dating companies such as match.com posting their strongest growth ever along with a few mergers and acquisitions.

Like many start-ups we have seen in the early days of the internet boon, money can be spent rapidly on a start-up and income is usually based on speculative and often wild forecasts.
Fortunately, the business of online dating has settled into a less speculative model and more of a realistic model but there is still plenty of room to innovate and come up with the next killer application.

There are perhaps umpteen reasons why one would choose a paid dating site over let’s say a free dating site. If you strongly believe in the adage that ‘You get what you pay for’ then you probably would go for the former of signing up to a paid dating site. However, for many online singles, they too have found their love online from many of the free dating sites available in the USA.
Like all big companies, the marketing department can dip their hands into the cash coffers and present the world at large with fancy adverts and bold claims to make you radiant, rich and happy etc. So what exactly are you missing out in the world of internet dating?

They do have a business model that is working for them and much of that has to do with advertising.
The ingredients for success to free dating sites are simple, obtain as much traffic as you can to the website and this will translate to many impressions of ‘ads’ on your site resulting in sufficient revenue to keep the business going. This can be very challenging for newcomers into the world of free dating sites business, but for a handful of few mentioned above, the model does work.
