Monroe effects: Some Divorce to Escape, Some Divorce for Reconciliation - Part 1

So much has been written and so much has been read about Marilyn Monroe that it has created a mystery of sorts, plus the men in her life have always wanted to control her so as to stall her success by being abusive in more than one way. One wonders whether it was jealousness of the male order that couldn’t digest a woman’s spectacular success or was it a plot by some feminist groups themselves who were at the risk of loosing the attention they used to enjoy as the full quota of media attention was just going to these Hollywood beauties. Such was the case of Marilyn Monroe who was being subjected to all the negative circus of life so much so that Dr. Greenson in whom Marilyn confided, had to isolate Marilyn from friends, colleagues and staff and what he had called “bad influences.
Dr. Greenson reasoned by isolating Marilyn from all her friends and saying “this is the kind of planning you do with an adolescent girl who needs guidance, friendliness and firmness, and she seems to be taking it very well. Of course, she doesn’t think about canceling several hours to go to Palm Springs to be with Mr. Frank Sinatra”.
Well…Frank as she called him was one of the three men with whom she was in a relationship at various points in her life.
But her first love was Joe DiMaggio who was a base ball player and was the best as Marilyn once said “I don’t know if I’m in love with him yet, but I know I like him more than any man I’ve ever met.”
Marilyn’s personality did contrast with Joe’s, as Joe came from a Catholic background with strict joint-family values which was all about strong Sicilian ethics and heritage. Whereas Marilyn came from a broken parental relationship, and had spent her child hood with foster parents.
As for Marilyn Monroe she was not just a celebrity but had become a brand in her own right and her branding had all the flavors of the generation she belonged to . As the sixties was the beginning of the romantic era which was detoxifying the residual effects of World War-II happening in Korea supported by Russia on the one hand and United states on the other, plus along with America, Russia too was enjoying it’s share of Soviet communist success as later on it earned the reputation of being the first country to dominate the Space Age. So both Russia and America were closely watching each other and as superpowers both were proving to the rest of the world about each one’s superiority and might. But America had a better score in terms of democracy and more freedom specially concerning women, so America for the world was a melting pot of happening things in those days, Unlike today’s America which is a struggling capitalist society reeling under the weight of recession and heavy debt .
Coming back to Joe, in July 1952, Joe made Marilyn meet his family in San Francisco. At once Marilyn clearly realized why Joe wanted her ‘HIS WOULD BE WIFE’ to be domestic - AS IN RAISING CHILDREN, COOKING ETC, and it had always been that way in Joe’s family being a catholic one. But all the same on January 14, 1954 the couple got married.
Some of Joe’s close friends who knew Joe too well felt that it wasn’t just the career aspect of Marilyn as an actress. But the media attention she got, was over shadowing him from the public attentio Joe had previously enjoyed. People soon saw and sensed that when they both walked into a room, it wasn’t Joe who was in the limelight in fact his presence at times was completely ignored. Obviously being a star baseball player of the country Joe was used to being the center of attention. But now Marilyn was getting all the attention and Joe couldn’t deal with that. Moreover coming from a strict Catholic household, it was certain that Joe got acutely enraged by watching the sensual and historical stunt of air blowing his wife’s dress over her head which became the sexy, skirt-flying shot for the movie “Seven Year Itch” and that scene of the film gave Marilyn the universal brand appeal that defines her even today. So Joe finally wanted to pull out and the couple got divorced by October 1954 just a few months after their formal marriage.

Movie: Mughal-e-Azam
Director: K. Asif
Year: 1960
Stars: Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Durga Khote
Snapshot of the Story
Movie is historical love story of Prince Salim (Dilip Kumar) and court dancer Anarkali (Madhubala). The highlight of the movie was it was half shot in black and white and half shot in Eastman color. The story of this movie has been modified a bit to give it an optimistic end. The movie shows how the Mughal prince Salim falls for the dancer of his father’s royal court Anarkali and how his father brutally gives Anarkali the punishment of being buried alive for loving his son.
Storyline
Mughal-e-Azam was the most successful movie of the 60’s with the towering performances from Dilip Kumar, Prithviraj Kapoor and beautiful Madhubala. Mughal-e-Azam is about Price Salim who is in love with court dancer Anarkali and wants to marry her. She is just a court dancer and she does not have status to marry a prince of the Mughal empire and is severley opposed by Akbar.
But on the other hand Salim was in deep love with Anarkali and wants to marry her at any cost and for this he accepts her father’s challenge to fight with the Mughal troops. Akbar who is right on his part as how a prince of the Mughal empire marry a so call court dancer and Salim thinks from his heart and sees nothing wrong following his heart beating for Anarkali. The rift between Akbar and Salim was fascinating to watch. Every dialog was well written and more than anything else beautifully delivered by Prithviraj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar is also known as “Tragedy King” of Indian cinema.
Madhubala was the queen on grace and beauty; she was one of the most beautiful actresses of Indian cinema. Madhubala was perfect for Anarkali’s role as it needed someone with simplicity and grace to justify court dancers that do not have status make Mughal prince mad about her beauty. Unfortunately Madhubala died at a very early age with a complicated heart disease in London.
Final Thoughts
Mughal-e-Azam was one of the most expensive movies of 60’s era and half shot in Eastman color. Mughal-e-Azam was one of the best classical movie of all time and this was also listed in the top 50 must watch Indian movies by www.imdb.com. Movie has given some unforgettable moments to Indian cinema and still inspires new directors and actors of our time. Director K. Asif was amongst very few directors in free India creating on screen magic with his excellent screenplay.

Movie: Ishqiya (love)
Director: Abhishek Chaubey
Year: 2010
Stars: Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Vidya Balan and Salman Shahid
Snapshot of the Story
Ishqiya is about two thieves Khalujaan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) running away with money from their boss. In this situation they feel that the only secure place to hide is their friend’s home, but finds out that he is dead. Krishan (Vidya Balan) playing the role of widow takes not time and gives them a place to hide. Story flows with a lot of convolutions and engage audience until the very last minute. Debutant director Abhishek Chaubey did a fantastic job as director of this movie.
Storyline
Story of the flick starts with Krishna (played by Vidya Balan) convincing her hubby Vidyadhar, who is a local gang-leader to surrender to police. He pretends to agree, but dramatically dies in a gas explosion. Now Krishna is living a life of a widow, then enters in the movie a team of two criminals Iftikhar aka Khalujan (played by Naseeruddin Shah) and Razzak Hussain aka Babban (played by Arshad Warsi). Both of them ditch their job and try to escape from their boss who wants to catch them and bury them alive.
The duo land up in Vidyadhar’s house to seek refuge from there, the boss comes to learn that Vidyadhar is dead, Krishna gives them shelter and starts seducing both of them and pretends to be in love with both of them to achieve her secret goal. Khalujan and Babban also fall to her trap, but don’t express their feelings either to Krishna or each other. The intimate scene between Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi made a lot of controversies before the release. Krishna proposes both of them to kidnap Kamalkant Kakkar aka KK, partner of Vidyadhar in his illegal job. Story takes an interesting twist and turn when all of them come to know that Vidyadhar is still alive.
Last one hour of the movie is full of drama. Babban and Khalujan were blindfolded by the Vidyadhar’s men and taken to get killed, they manage to escape from there, and this fight sequence is ordinary and reminds us of the 90’s era. Finally, Vidyadhar gets killed and the trio has the last laugh.
Final Thoughts
Ishqiya is one time watch movie and does not have enough fire power to attract the audience for a second showing. It has an average story and except for some of the scene are very funny and has some vulgar dialogs. Highlight of the movie is Vidya Balan and her abusive dialogs which she does with ease and perfection. Naseeruddin Shah was fantastic as Khalujan and so did Arshan Warsi. Director Abhishek Chaubey did a fantastic job and made a fantastic first movie as debutant. Lyricist Gulzar good song and “Dil to Baccha Hai ji” and “Ibn-E-Batuta” were both chart toppers for months.
Rating
Ishqiya scores 6 out of 10 for its dialogs and Vidya Balan’s performance that many leading actress would not think of doing onscreen. Songs written by Gulzar and sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gave it extra mileage.

Sunday, January 1st, 2012
Movie: Shree 420 (Mr. Cheat)
Director: Raj Kapoor
Year: 1955
Stars: Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Nadira, Nemo and Lalita Pawar
Snapshot of the Story
Raj Kapoor was the biggest and probably the first big show man of Indian cinema. He tried his luck in acting, direction and as producer. He was the man with special charisma that increased as his career grew.
Shree 420 was the super hit movie of the 50’s era with towering performances from Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Shree 420 is known for its classical romance and unforgettable romantic scenes in the rain where Raj Kapoor and Nargis share the same umbrella that gave it an exquisite feel. Raj Kapoor was the master in his art and was amongst the very few who knew what audience wanted and whatever he did created magic on the silver screen.
Storyline
The story of Shree 420 is of Raj (played by Raj Kapoor) a humble guy coming from a small town to the city of dreams in Bombay in search of a job. Shree 420 beautifully portrays how difficult is to survive in Bombay at that time and how Raj finds his way and does not hesitate to choose the right path when realized that he is in the wrong company.
Raj is full of enthusiasm, self belief and has an innocent charm about him. But he takes no time to learn that living in Bombay he needs to be a sharp and cunning man. Bombay is the place he finds his true love. Vidya (Nargis) is a poor girl and takes care of her parents by earning her bread and butter as a school teacher.
Struggling to find a decent job for himself, Raj meets a businessman Sonchand (Nemo) and gets attracted by his luxurious lifestyle. Raj starts to believe that he also can become rich, but he is not aware about the Sonchand’s evil intentions. On the other hand, Sonchand offers Raj to work on his new project. Sonchand is working on the project where we would be building homes for poor people available at very cheap rates. Raj soon finds himself as a victim of dirty tricks by Sonchand and there are no real intentions by Sonchand who only wants to make money and run away with it. Raj feels sorry for what he did and goes to those poor people and hands over the bond papers to them preventing them from becoming homeless.
When the story is revolving around the intense drama it also has the romantic angle to it as Raj and Vidya fall in love with each other, Nargis played the role of Vidya and looked stunning. Her femininity, expressions and her innocence only shouts the fact that she is born to act and with release of “Shree 420” Indian cinema has witnessed the birth of new superstar in the form of Nargis.
Final Thoughts
“Shree 420” did turn out to be the super hit movie with a simple story and towering performances of Raj Kapoor who looked very much a small town guy and has that innocent charm about him. Nargis was excellent and her beauty and eyes did much coupled with her dialogs. Shree 420 is directed by non other than Raj Kapoor himself, which is quite an achievement to be in the shoes of both an actor and director. Raj Kapoor was the only other actor in the Indian cinema and probably in the world who played this dual role in his career. Legendary Shankar – Jaikishan created the vibrant and romantic music of the decade and the song “Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua” still fresh in everyone’s memory and “Mera Joota hai Japani ye Patlun englistani Sar pe lal topi rusi par phir bhi dil hai Hindustani” became a trade mark of the movie aka “Wearing torn Japanese shoes, English trousers, a red Russian cap but with an Indian heart”

This is Where it Ends Baby !!

High octane couple Russell Brand and Katy Perry finally called it off. Personally I am not surprised but for many of you who are surprised by this news need to know that for all this while Russell was in the process of recovery from his addictive state, it was all falling heavily on Katy the one person in his “life”. Thereafter, before she could do anything about it, the emotional stress lead to a negative chain reaction. Slowly cracks in the relationship started appearing one after the other which was affecting the non-personal areas of the couple. Well, no wonder they didn’t last. What kind of a persona can live up to that?
What is very heart-touching is that theirs was a marriage which happened as per traditional Hindu ceremony, at a place near to “Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary” in Rajasthan western India, the same location where Brand proposed Katy. Now, as per popular opinion getting married in a very traditional and anti-divorce country like India should have given the couple a better “marriage mileage” at least a lot more than other Hollywood celebrities.
On the contrary for Russell it was pure psychology that rode above cultural and ritualistic sentiments, no wonder Brand succumbed to the ways of the heart which he did what had to be done. So Brand filed for divorce from Katy in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences.
As for Katy her religious roots and cultural sentiments did matter, at least to the extent it did not allow her to initiate the divorce proceedings, due to her evangelical Christian background and her family’s belief that divorce is wrong, so our man Russell rose to the occasion and detonated the time bomb called divorce .
Detonation is a triggered event so what are those trigger points which can blow up a marriage is what evolutionary psychologist and pundits of “Darwin theory” are still trying to figure out.
“Divorce trigger point management” or in short DTPM is what Modern Society should be learning and improving upon because in human couples separation of the pair is true but is not normally desired so it is not valid. Therefore it needs to be legally sanctioned, but in animals it is both true and valid since it is sanctioned by the “laws of natural selection”.
All I can say is that I wish Charles Darwin was alive today and guess where his office would be….of course it would be in the Divorce Capital of the world …still guessing ..it is Hollywood of course!
